Sholar to run for Tognarelli vacancy, seat she currently holds by appointment

Campaigns & Elections

Madison County Circuit Judge Amy Sholar, a Republican, announced on Monday that she will seek election next year to the seat she currently holds by appointment.

Last month, the Illinois Supreme Court confirmed Sholar to a vacancy created by the retirement of circuit judge Richard Tognarelli. Supreme Court Justice David Overstreet, who recommended Sholar's appointment to the full court, swore her in on April 30.

The seat is a "resident" circuit judgeship in the Third Judicial District, comprised of Madison and Bond counties. Only Madison County voters will decide the race.

"I was honored to be chosen by Justice Overstreet for this seat on the bench,” Sholar stated in a press release. “I hit the ground running and have been hearing cases daily since taking my oath of office. I look forward to continuing to work hard for the citizens of Madison County and earning their support for a full term in November of 2022.”

Sholar serves as presiding judge of the Family Law Division.

Prior to her judicial appointment, Sholar was most recently a partner in Sholar Stephan Law in Alton, and has civil and criminal case experience.

According to the press release announcing her election bid, Sholar is "most proud" of the guardian ad litem cases she has handled, representing the interests of children and disabled adults who are under court jurisdiction.

“I took very seriously the responsibility of representing those most vulnerable,” Sholar stated.  “As a judge, I will continue to ensure all participants are treated fairly and with respect in family court.”

Former Republican congressman John Shimkus will serve as Sholar’s election campaign chair.

“Amy Sholar is a great addition to the Madison County Court,” stated Shimkus in the release. “Her experience, dedication and compassion will serve the citizens of this county very well. I am honored to be chairing her election campaign.”

The primary election is March 15, 2022; the general election is Nov. 8, 2022.
