Woman alleges manicure tools caused infection

Lawsuits

BELLEVILLE — A Carbondale nail salon is accused of failing to properly clean its equipment, which allegedly led to a woman's infection after receiving a manicure.

Kathena Clemons filed a complaint April 27 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against La Nail Spa LLC, alleging premises liability and negligence.

Clemons claims in her suit that she was at La Nail & Spa on East Main Street in Carbondale on July 10, 2020, to receive a manicure. She alleges that "a dirty, infected and/or otherwise unfit-for-use tool" was used during her manicure, which caused her left hand and fingers to become infected and require surgery.

Clemons claims she not only endured pain and suffering as a result of her infection but also incurred medical treatment expenses and permanent disfigurement.

She alleges in her complaint that La Nail Spa failed to properly inspect and maintain the tools they used during her manicure. Clemons further alleges La Nail Spa failed to follow "local safety guidelines and Illinois laws and codes" by not properly cleaning their tools or warn of the dangerous condition.

Clemons seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Michael Glisson and Taylor Fehrenz of Williamson, Webster, Falb & Glisson in Alton.
