Threlkeld appointed to Dugan vacancy; Seat will be on '22 ballot

Judge Christopher P. Threlkeld has been appointed to the David Dugan vacancy in Madison County Circuit Court, at the recommendation of retiring Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier. 

Dugan was appointed federal judge at U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois on Sept.16.

Threlkeld has been serving on the court since February, on a temporary assignment for the vacancy of Dave Hylla, who retired in November 2019.

“Judge Threlkeld has served the citizens ably during his time on the bench, and his appointment to fill the vacancy is warranted by his performance thus far," said Chief Judge Bill Mudge in a press release from the Supreme Court. "He is decisive, fair and impartial. It’s what one should expect from a good judge."

The appointment takes effect on Dec. 7 and will conclude on Dec. 5, 2022, when the vacancy will be filled by the winner of the November 2022 general election.

“I would like to thank Justice Karmeier and the Supreme Court for this opportunity,” Threlkeld said. “I have enjoyed serving during the previous temporary appointment and I look

forward to continuing to serve the people of Madison County.”

According to the rleaes, Threlkeld has has extensive courtroom experience in both civil and criminal cases at the state and federal levels and was previously a partner with the law firm of Lucco, Brown, Threlkeld & Dawson LLP. He started with the firm in 2000 as an associate.

Threlkeld graduated from The Citadel with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and earned his juris doctor from the Saint Louis University School of Law. He also holds an M.B.A from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Threlkeld’s professional associations include the Madison County Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, and the

Missouri Bar Association. He is a past president of the Madison County Bar Association. The Third Judicial Circuit encompasses Madison and Bond counties.

In Tuesday's election, Judge Stephen Stobbs, Republican, was elected to the at large vacancy of retired circuit judge Andreas Matoesian, over Glen Carbon attorney Leslie Wood, Democrat, by a margin of 57 to 43 percent, or 79,782 to 59,018 votes in Madison and Bond counties.

The Hylla resident ciruit judge vacancy was won by attorney Amy Maher, Republican, over State's Attorney Tom Gibbons, Democrat, by a margin of 53 to 47 percent, or 70,232 to 61,393 votes in Madison County.
