Nearly $3 million spent to keep Bristow seat in Democratic majority - nearly nine times as Republican challenger Elik's campaign

Campaigns & Elections

Since State Rep. Monica Bristow (D-Alton) was first elected in 2018, her campaign committee has pulled in $2,960,236 - half of which has come since the beginning of this month.

Campaign committees controlled by House Speaker Michael Madigan - Democratic Majority and the Democratic Party of Illinois - have contributed $833,403 this month, about half of what her campaign has collected in October, and a little more than a third of a two-year total.

Elected every two years, fund-raising is continuous for a legislator job that pays around $70,000 per year, plus per diem.

Bristow's Republican challenger Amy Elik of Alton has raised $346,785 since announcing her run last October. Most of the total - $285,485 - has come from the House Republican Organization, Illinois Republican Party and the Illinois Opportunity Project.

Elik, 47, of Alton, is a certified public accountant and auditor, running on a platform of fiscal conservatism and ethics reform in state government.

She has challenged Bristow to inform voters on her Madigan stance - whether Bristow would support him for another term as Speaker, as he faces allegations of a pay-to-play bribery scheme with Commonwealth Edison. Federal prosecutors are looking into alleged bribery of Madigan for passage of legislation that that funneled billions of dollars the electric utility's way.

Before her election in 2018, Bristow, 58, had served as president of the Riverbend Growth Association from 2003 until November 2017. She was appointed to the House seat long held by state Rep. Daniel Beiser in the 111th District in December 2017. She defeated Republican Mike Babcock in the 2018 General Election.
