BELLEVILLE — A patient is suing a doctor, alleging she suffers from nerve damage after undergoing a hysterectomy.

Julia A. Schult and Dennis Schult filed a complaint April 2 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Steven Charles Mathus, alleging negligence and breach in the standard of proper care.

The suit states Julia Schult was admitted to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville by Mathus on Feb. 5, 2007 for a number of surgical procedures, including a hysterectomy. The suit alleges Mathus was negligent in his approach and failed to protect Schult from nerve damage.

Julia Schult claims she suffers from abdominal pain, painful intercourse, bowel incontinence and severe pain due to the defendant's negligence.

The Schults seek more than $50,000, plus costs of suit. They are represented by attorney Kevin T. Dawson of Binsbacher, Griffithe & Dawson LLC in Mascoutah.
