BELLEVILLE — An estate administrator is suing the operators of a long-term care facility, alleging a patient died due to negligent care.

Edward Cornwell, estate administrator of Ailish O. Cornwell, filed a complaint on Nov. 27 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Cedar Ridge Health and Rehab Center, et. al., alleging they failed to comply with the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that between April 6 and April 13, Ailish Cornwell was a resident at the defendants long-term care facility. While she was a resident, the suit states that the decedent suffered asphyxiation following voluminous aspiration of ingested food and gastric emesis, which lead to her death.

The plaintiff alleges Cedar Ridge failed to provide adequate preventative care, protection and treatment.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus attorney's fees, costs and all further appropriate relief. He is represented by Robert J. Sprague of Sprague and Urban in Belleville and J.J. Burns of Dollar Burns & Becker LC in Kansas City.
