Belleville couple sues over slip and fall at gas pump

A couple is suing the owners of a Belleville gas station for injuries the wife allegedly suffered after slipping and falling on ice at the gas pump.

Sharon and Jay Hoffman, of Belleville filed a lawsuit on Oct. 19 against Supervalue Holdings, Inc., and Shop' N Save Warehouse Foods, Inc., in the Circuit Court of St. Clair County, alleging negligence.

The plaintiffs' complaint alleges that on Jan. 22, 2014, while a patron at the Shop' N Save fuel Express in Belleville, Sharon Hoffman slipped and fell on an unnatural accumulation of ice located below a permanent overhead canopy. The complaint asserts the defendants should have discovered or warned her of the problem.

Jay Hoffman is seeking damages for the loss of consortium arising out of injuries to his wife.

The plaintiffs seek damages in excess of $75,000, plus costs of litigation.
