John J. Hopkins News

Goodbye, Gator...

By John J. Hopkins |
Our beloved Gator need not only be remembered for how he died, but more for how he lived. He lived his short life full and complete, with no regrets. We need now to carry on, to love more, appreciate more, knowing in the wash of our tears, Nick is still with us in spirit. We need only to seek his presence in our memories, and then carry on. It will be hard, but he is worth it. Be not afraid.

It's a Wonderful County!

... This time, he was filled not with despair, but hope. Hope born of the realization that despite all the negative publicity, it really was a Wonderful County, and the power to change the current course of events comes from within–within him and all who think alike.

Thanks, Champ, for being an American

On the weekend of July 13-15, my wife Margaret and I traveled South to visit with old friends from Nashville. For most of the past 20-plus years, we have met in Memphis, as a sort of rounding spot for our activities. This year for a change we headed east to Louisville, Kentucky, for bourbon, good food and history.

Say it ain't so Joe

The 1919 World Series was intentionally lost by the Chicago White Sox,fixing the game to appease gamblers and to make a pretty payoff themselves. The scheme unraveled, resulting in criminal prosecutions and a lifetime ban from baseball for the conspirators.

Reason, fear and the politics of hysteria

The election for the U.S. Senate seat in Alabama is now history. Democrat Doug Jones narrowly defeated Republican Roy Moore by a margin of 2 percent, the exact amount of write-in votes filed on behalf of alternative GOP candidates. While the results may have been surprising to some, it certainly is not an omen for the future, but more of aberration.

Thank you for your service

By John J. Hopkins |
We honor not those who paid the ultimate price, but stop and show gratitude to ALL those who served, living and dead. We acknowledge the truth that “Freedom is not Free,” and pause with gratitude, with respect. While all are worthy of our efforts, this year I propose a long overdue expression for one special group - the Vietnam Veteran.

Last Dance for Tom Petty

By John J. Hopkins |
Tom Petty dying was like losing a family member, or a very dear, close friend.

E Pluribus Unum

“From many, One.” I wonder, with the lack of civics training in public schools, how many citizens actually can state and more importantly, translate the phrase. I would think the numbers are small, indeed, very small.

For one day, be an American

By John J. Hopkins |
It would be so pleasant to see instead the veils of partisan rancor drop, if just for one day. It would be so encouraging to see that for just one day, the delusional blame game with the Russians be temporarily set aside. It would be so beneficial to our Nation, that for just one day, these crybabies would no longer be Democrats, no longer be Liberals, but Americans instead.

Sitting on the bar stool at the Stagger Inn, he reviewed the past year not with any sense of holiday cheer, but with despair and doom–a clear and unmistakable feeling of foreboding for the future.

You can't handle the truth!

By John J. Hopkins |
Clinton lost because she was conceited, condescending and crooked. Case closed.

Wimps, whiners and wussies

By John J. Hopkins |
Imagine if you will, that someone - anyone - was involved in a very bad accident on November 6, two days before the election.

Trump can...must win

By John J. Hopkins |
It is neither an exaggeration nor an original thought to say the 2016 Presidential election has been one for the books.

The 1943 classic movie “Casablanca” is always on the 10 Best movies of all times, loaded as it is with memorable characters and lines.

Barack Hussein Trump

By John J. Hopkins |
With the first Presidential debate competed and the second looming on Sunday it is good to reflect and analyze the state of Campaign 2016.

What difference does it make?

By John J. Hopkins |
As Shakespeare once wrote, "The evil men lives on after them, but the good is oft interred with their bones." Such will it be so with Madame Clinton.

Rest in peace, champion of the forgotten

With the Oscar nominations being announced today, it seems only fitting that the first column of 2016 deals with subject matter that gave rise to an award winning performance.

He finally felt a sense of Holiday Peace. He headed out – not to the office, but home to his family…

Lest we forget

Francis Ford Coppola, Oscar winning director and screenwriter and wine maker extraordinaire, had a less than successful yet very good film in 1987 with “Gardens of Stone.” Dealing with the Old Guard, the Army unit assigned to the ceremonial duties at Arlington National cemetery, the story centers on a back story to the Vietnam conflict, the tension between preserving the living at all costs and honoring the dead for their payment of the “last full measure of devotion.” A good picture,
