BELLEVILLE – The family of a Memorial Hospital patient claims she died because the hospital failed to give her proper care.
Plaintiff Glenda Brown, acting as special executor of the estate of Geraldine Richardson, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against The Protestant Memorial Medical Center, doing business as Memorial Hospital, and Muhammad Ansari, M.D., citing negligence in violation of the state's Wrongful Death Act.
According to the lawsuit, on January 25, 2017, Richardson was admitted to Memorial Hospital complaining of weakness and chest pain. She passed away under the hospital's care on February 1, 2017.
The lawsuit alleges that during her stay, Memorial Hospital and a cardiologist rendered comfort care. The suit states that despite her family's wishes, the defendants negligently failed to render necessary medical treatment and proper testing, causing Richardson's death.
Brown alleges that as a result of the defendants' negligence, Richardson's next of kin have been permanently deprived of her love and companionship. As a result, they have suffered grief and sorrow, the suit states.
The plaintiff is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Bruce N. Cook of Cook, Bartholomew, Shevlin, Cook & Jones, LLP in Belleville.
