St. Clair County Associate Judges Kevin Hoerner and Patrick Foley, Democrats, and Circuit Judge Bill Stiehl, Republican, were recommended in an Illinois State Bar Association advisory poll released Monday.
Attorneys who participated in the poll, however, rated Republican Paul Evans as not recommended.
Evans has been heavily involved in county politics. He recently mounted a legal challenge to the county's Democratically drawn political map and has lodged electoral objections against county Democrat candidates.
Foley and Stiehl are seeking election to the vacancy of former Circuit Judge Ron Duebbert.
Foley was rated 97.30 in "meets requirements of office" by 112 attorneys who participated in the poll.
Stiehl, who was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to fill the remainder of Duebbert's term, was rated 94.29 in meets requirements of office by 107 attorneys.
Evans and Hoerner will face off for the vacancy of Circuit Judge Stephen McGlynn who was elevated to the federal bench in 2020.
Evans was rated 38.46 in meets requirements of office by 82 attorneys who participated in the poll.
Hoerner was rated 90.60 in meets requirements of office by 118 attorneys.
The ISBA's advisory poll is conducted electronically and by mail and is sent to all ISBA members in the circuit or district from which a candidate seeks election (except Cook County).
Illinois licensed attorneys who are not members of the ISBA, or any Illinois licensed attorney outside the circuit or district, may request a ballot.
Opinions expressed in the poll are those of the attorneys who chose to respond and their opinions do not reflect the opinions of the ISBA or the opinions of all Illinois attorneys.
Candidates must receive at least 65% “yes” responses to that question in order to be rated as “recommended”. Percentage is based on "yes" responses to each question; "no opinion" responses are not included.
The St. Clair County judicial candidates are running unopposed in the June 28 primary election. The general election is Nov. 8.
