Madison County Clerk Debra Ming Mendoza, Democrat, seeking a third term, will face off in the general election against the winner of the Republican primary.

County Board member Mike Walters and nurse educator Linda Andreas announced this week that they will seek the GOP nomination for County Clerk.

The primary election is June 28.

Walters, who has served as a member of the County Board for more than 15 years, announced his campaign on March 15 after officially filing his petitions for the office on March 14. Walters also serves as the board’s Chairman Pro-Tem and chairs the county judiciary committee.

“Madison County residents deserve government agencies that are efficient, responsive, and responsible,” Walters stated. “As County Clerk, I’ll utilize my public and private sector experience to ensure the office is run efficiently and that Madison County citizens can have confidence in the integrity of their elections and vital records systems.”

Andreas announced her candidacy in December and officially filed her petitions on March 14.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Goldfarb School of Nursing and a bachelor’s degree in workforce education and development from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Andreas says that while she is not a politician, she seeks to support policies and procedures that protect Madison County residents’ votes and provide more transparency and accessibility.

“She is passionate about civic responsibility and duty, as well as our rights and liberties, and hopes that she will set an example of citizen involvement for all levels of city and county government,” a press release states.
