Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine selected Emily Johnson Nielsen to serve as the Civil Division Chief for the State’s Attorney’s Office.

“We’re pleased to have Emily as our new Civil Division Chief,” Haine stated in a press release. “With her wealth of experience in civil litigation and local government law and her strong ties to the local community, she will make her (sic) a great addition to our team.”

Prior to joining the State’s Attorney’s Office, Nielsen served as managing partner of Hunter & Johnson PC in Alton.

Nielsen grew up in Godfrey and attended Marquette Catholic High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis and her juris doctor from the Southern Illinois University School of Law.

Nielsen is a member of the Alton-Wood River Bar Association, the Madison County Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association and the Missouri Bar.

The position of Civil Division Chief was previously held by assistant state’s attorney Andrew Carruthers, who was appointed an associate judge in December to fill former judge Clarence Harrison’s vacancy.
