Haine defeats Uhe by 10-point margin for Madison County State's Attorney

Campaigns & Elections

Republican Tom Haine is elected Madison County State’s Attorney, defeating opponent Crystal Uhe by a 55-45 margin.

Haine said he is "honored by the trust the voters have placed in me," and that he's "looking forward to getting to work."

"Congratulations to all the other fantastic people who won last night as well," he added. "This is truly a new conservative era in Madison County politics."

With all precincts reporting, Haine received 72,315 votes with Uhe receiving 59,013 votes.

"I want to thank the people of Madison County for allowing me to serve in the State's Attorney's office for more than 15 years," Uhe said. "I want to thank everyone that voted for me. I wish Tom Haine the best and will work during the transition period to make sure the people of Madison County have a smooth transition. I look forward to what the future holds to continue to serve the community I love."

Haine, who is the son of former Madison County State's Attorney and State Senator Bill Haine, has worked as a criminal prosecutor for the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney.

"As our next State's Attorney, Tom will enforce the law swiftly and justly. He will expedite the legal process and ensure good police work isn't wasted with timid prosecution that lets criminals fall through the cracks and weakens the bond between our law enforcement and community," his campaign website states. "And he will run as accessible and responsive office, ensuring crimes are prosecuted, justice is served, and the law is equally and fairly applied to all the citizens of Madison County."

During the campaign, Haine attacked Uhe's record, saying 90 percent of clemency requests from convicted felons since last year went "completely unopposed." Uhe currently serves as the first assistant State's Attorney.

Uhe responded that the State's Attorney's Office had a "standing objection" on murder cases with the Illinois Prisoner Review Board. Haine had called her response "dishonest," saying the Prisoner Review Board does not permit blanket standing objections.
