Madison County circuit judge campaign contributions trickle in as Election Day approaches

With roughly one week until Election Day, campaign contributions for candidates running for circuit judge in Madison County have been modest. 

State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons, Democrat, and attorney Amy Maher, Republican, are running for the vacancy created by the retirement of former Chief Judge Dave Hylla.

Associate Judge Stephen Stobbs, Republican, is running against Glen Carbon attorney Leslie Ann Wood, Democrat, for the vacancy created by the retirement of former Circuit Judge Andreas Matoesian. 

Only Gibbons and Maher received contributions of $1,000 or more during the most recent reporting period from July 1 through Sept. 30. None of the candidates have reported contributions of $1,000 or more since then. 

Gibbons received the most contributions in the weeks leading up to the election, including:

  • $11,600 from asbestos plaintiff firm Simmons Hanley Conroy on Sept. 28
  • $1,385 from asbestos plaintiff attorney Nathaniel Mudd of MRHFM Law Firm on Sept. 28
  • $1,000 from law firm Pratt & Tobin PC on Sept. 28
  • $1,000 from asbestos plaintiff attorney Marcus Raichle of MRHFM Law Firm on Sept. 28
According to the quarterly report filed by Gibbons’ campaign committee, Citizens for Tom Gibbons, he received $19,6325 in itemized and $350 in not-itemized contributions. He also reported $1,382 in itemized transfers in. He reported no in-kind contributions.

In addition to the September contributions, Gibbons received $1,000 from the law firm Byron Carlson Petri Kalb on July 9. 

Gibbons’ committee reported a total of $13,400.34 in expenditures. He had $30,638.46 in available funds at the close of the reporting period. 

Maher’s campaign committee, Maher for Judge, reported $6,450 in itemized and $2,750 in not-itemized contributions for the reporting period ending Sept. 30. She also reported $100 in not-itemized transfers in, $5,000 in itemized loans, and $3,154.30 in in-kind contributions. 

During the reporting period, Maher received $1,000 from Alton attorney Amy Sholar on Aug. 1 and $2,250 from Riverbender.com Community Center on Sept. 23. 

Maher’s committee reported $5,834.02 in expenditures. She had $17,457.13 in available funds. 

According to the quarterly report filed by Stobbs’ campaign committee, Citizens for Stobbs, he received a total of $275 contributions for the reporting period ending Sept. 30. His contributions included $250 in itemized contributions with $25 in not-itemized contributions. 

Stobbs’ committee reported $14,207 in total expenditures for the reporting period. He had $28,853.13 in available funds. 

Wood’s campaign committee, Committee to Elect Leslie Ann Wood, reported $8,932 in itemized contributions and $1,300 in not-itemized contributions for the reporting period. 

Her committee reported $7,748.85 in total expenditures. She had $4,111.21 in available funds at the close of the reporting period.
