BENTON — An inmate claims he did not receive the proper medical care for a hernia.

Martell Flippins filed a complaint May 16 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against Wexford Health Source, Dr. V. Shah, Lawrence Correctional Center, Dr. F. Ahmed, Dr. Ritz, S. Stover, L. Cunningham, J. Baldwin and S. Benton, alleging indifference, cruel and unusual punishment and discrimination.

The suit states Flippins has been incarcerated in Lawrence Correctional Center since 2017 and was diagnosed with a hernia. The suit alleges Flippins waited for health care but was denied treatment.

The plaintiff alleges he has exhausted all options and has been caused to suffer unduly as result of the defendants' negligence, which includes denying his prescriptions.

Flippins seeks a trial by jury, $250,000 in compensatory damages, $250,000 in punitive damages and all other proper relief. He is representing himself pro se.
