Suit alleges patient died from over sedation

BELLEVILLE — A Belleville medical center is being sued after a patient was allegedly over sedated during a procedure and died as a result.

William Elkins, as special administrator of the estate of Doris Elkins, deceased, filed a complaint April 26 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against The Protestant Memorial Medical Center, doing business as Memorial Hospital, alleging medical negligence.

The suit states that in March 2017, Doris Elkins, was admitted to Memorial Hospital for a vertebral augmentation under the care of Dr. Anthony Anderson. Elkins was allegedly over sedated during her medical procedure at the hospital and died May 1, 2017.

William Elkins seeks a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus court costs. He is represented by attorney Bruce N. Cook of Cook, Bartholomew, Shevlin, Cook & Jones LLP in Belleville.
