BENTON —A woman is suing a man for allegedly accessing her credit information through a false Credit Karma account.
Elizabeth Wingerter filed a complaint on April 16 in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Illinois against Todd Dunn, alleging violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, fraud and infliction of emotional distress.
The suit states that the plaintiff attempted to register for an account on Credit Karma on April 17, 2017 and was informed that she already had an account. The suit states that on April 18, 2017, Credit Karma deactivated the account registered with the plaintiff's information. Wingerter alleges that from Jan. 12, 2015 to April 14, 2017, the defendant had obtained the plaintiff's information using false pretenses, without the plaintiff's consent.
The plaintiff is seeking trial by jury, statutory damages of $1,000 per violation, court costs and attorneys' fees. The plaintiff is represented by Michael L. McGlynn in Belleville and Christopher P. Koeneman of Koeneman Law Offices in Chester.
