EDWARDSVILLE — A Madison County woman is suing Shell, alleging the defendant's operations contaminated her Roxana home and caused her to develop leukemia.

Linda Walters filed a complaint April 4 in Madison County Circuit Court against Shell Oil Company, Equilon Enterprises LLC, doing business as Shell Oil Products UC, and  BP Products North America Inc., alleging negligence and liability.

The suit states Shell was operating near the plaintiff's former home in Roxana and was regularly spilling chemicals from its refineries, including benzene and hydrocarbons. Walters claims Shell's operations caused chemicals to migrate to the plaintiff's home, resulting in her developing chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Walters seeks trial by jury, court costs, compensatory damages and all other appropriate relief. She is represented by attorneys Ted N. Gianaris and Jo Anna Pollock of Simmons Hanly Conroy in Alton.
