BELLEVILLE—A maintenance worker is suing Union Pacific Railroad Company, a transportation company, citing alleged unsafe work environment.

Lloyd Riley filed a complaint on Nov. 7 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Union Pacific Railroad Company, alleging that the transportation company failed to provide a reasonably safe place to work.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that during the course of his employment with the defendant he was exposed to toxic substances. In 2015, he learned that he developed lung cancer. He has suffered great pain, disability, loss of normal life and medical expenses. The plaintiff holds Union Pacific Railroad Company responsible because despite knowing the health hazards associated with occupational exposure to asbestos-containing products, the defendant continued to use the same during plaintiff's employment.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendant in an amount greater than $50,000, plus costs. He is represented by William P. Gavin of Gavin Law Firm LLC in Belleville.
