BELLEVILLE — An African-American lab associate accuses Memorial Hospital of not taking action against racist language and harassment from her fellow co-workers.

Ja'Lisa Turner filed a complaint on Sept. 14 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center, which does business as Memorial Hospital.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was subjected to severe and pervasive unwelcome harassment based on her race. She suffered emotional distress, anxiety, pain and suffering and humiliation, the complaint states.

The plaintiff alleges the hospital failed to take corrective actions to prevent workplace discrimination and harassment.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000, attorney's fees and costs. She is represented by John H. Leskera of Leskera Law Firm in Collinsville.
