Special representative accuses motorist of wrongful death in Alton pedestrian collision

Car accident 13

EDWARDSVILLE – The representative of a man killed by a motorist while walking along the road in Alton has filed a wrongful death suit against the driver involved.

Evelyn Braxton, individually and as special representative of the estate of Jonathan Casey Jr., deceased, filed a complaint on Feb. 12 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Cody Coughlin, alleging wrongful death.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on June 12, 2017, Jonathan Casey Jr. was walking along East Fourth Street in Alton when he was hit by the defendant's motor vehicle. The suit states Casey Jr. sustained serious bodily injuries and later died as a result.

The plaintiff alleges Coughlin failed to keep a proper lookout for pedestrians and other vehicles lawfully on the road and negligently left the scene and did not provide aid to Casey Jr.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount of more than $50,000, plus costs of the action and all further relief that the court may deem just and proper.

She is represented by Rodney D. Caffey and Ralph J. Mendelson of The Caffey Law Firm LLC in Godfrey.
