EDWARDSVILLE – The mother of a minor is suing a motorist, alleging negligence over injuries she says she and her daughter suffered in an automobile accident.
Erin D. Stambaugh and Alexandra Cajigas, a minor, filed the lawsuit Feb. 26 in Madison County Circuit Court against Carmen E. Inman, alleging negligence.
According to the complaint, on Oct. 7, 2014, Stambaugh was driving a vehicle northbound on state Route 159 at its intersection with Springfield Drive in Fort Russell Township while Inman was driving a vehicle in the same direction and allegedly rear-ended the plaintiffs' vehicle.
The suit says the defendant was negligent in failing to reduce her speed to avoid a collision, speeding, failing to brake, steer or maneuver her vehicle to avoid a collision, and failing to keep a proper lookout. As a result of this negligence, the lawsuit states, Cajigas' vehicle collided with the rear of Stambaugh's while the plaintiff was stopped and attempting to turn left onto Springfield Drive.
The lawsuit says the collision caused both plaintiffs extensive injuries to their neck, back and right shoulder. This has led to extensive medical bills, lost wages and disability. Also, the complaint states, Stambaugh has become financially responsible for the medical care and expenses of her daughter.
Stambaugh and Cajigas seek at least $50,000 each for the two counts, plus court costs and other relief the court deems just and proper. They are represented by attorneys Rodney D. Caffey and Ralph J. Mendelsohn of The Caffey Law Firm LLC in Godfrey.
