Godfrey Wal-Mart sued over shopper's trip and fall

A man has filed suit against Wal-Mart after he says he tripped on a floor mat while shopping.

Joseph Govero claims he was shopping at Wal-Mart at 6660 Godfrey Road in Godfrey on Aug. 13, 2012, when he tripped and fell on the edge of a floor mat.

Because of his fall, Govero sustained severe and permanent injuries to his left knee, neck and back; suffered great physical pain and mental anguish; incurred medical costs; and lost wages, according to the complaint filed Oct. 8 in Madison County Circuit Court. He also endured disability and lost his normal life, the suit states.

Govero blames Wal-Mart for causing his fall, saying it negligently failed to properly maintain its floor mats, failed to perform proper inspections of its floor mats, failed to warn of the dangerous condition of the floor mats, failed to place a warning sign of the dangerous condition, used a floor mat without a beveled edge and used a floor mat that was worn.

In his complaint, Govero is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.

Michael P. Glisson of Williamson, Webster, Falb and Glisson in Alton will be representing him.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 13-L-1690.
