Alton couple sued by relative over trip on basement stairs

An Alton couple is being sued by a relative who says he fell on their basement stairs.

Chancey Nesbit filed a lawsuit Aug. 12 in Madison County Circuit Court against William and Pamela Nesbit.

Chancey visited William and Pamela at their home the 3300 block of Badley Avenue in September 2012, according to the complaint. As he was coming up the basement stairs, Chancey says he tripped on loose carpeting and fell, seriously hurting his right leg.

Chancey accuses the defendants of negligence for allegedly failing to properly maintain the stairs, not having adequate lighting for the stairway and failing to have a handrail for the stairs. He asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical expenses, loss of income and court fees.

Attorney Samuel A. Mormino Jr. of Alton represents Chancey.
