Man seeks damages after baseball passes through batting cage net

A St. Louis man says he was hit in the head by a baseball that went through a batting cage net at a Granite City sports complex.

Joseph D. Madden filed a lawsuit July 2 in Madison County Circuit Court against Albert Trtanj and Derek S. Trtanj, individually and as the owner and manager of Lakeview Golf & Sports Center.

Madden was a customer of Lakeview Golf & Sports Center in July 2011 and was standing in line to use the batting cage in an area designated as a waiting area, according to the complaint. Madden claims a baseball passed through a hole in the safety netting and hit him. He says the impact broke the bone around his eye, caused him to lose vision in one eye and left him with a deviated septum.

Madden accuses the Trtanjes of negligence for failing to fix the broken safety net or warn customers about the dangers of the defective net. He asks for more than $100,000 in damages for medical expenses, lost wages and court costs.

Attorney R. Tyson Mutrux of St. Louis represents Madden. They request a jury trial.
