Venice Township seeks in excess of $50K over sunken road

Venice Township claims a Belleville plumbing company failed to properly repair one of the town's roads after putting in a pipeline.

Venice Township filed a lawsuit in Madison County Circuit Court Feb. 22 against Illinois American Water Company and Ehret Inc.

Illinois American Water Company provides water to Madison County residents, including those living in Venice Township, according to the petition. In 1999 Illinois American allegedly subcontracted with Ehret to put in a water pipe alongside Old Rock Road.

The township alleges Ehret dug a trench through part of the pavement of Old Rock Road, put in the pipe and tried to repair the surface damage to the road. Since then, however, Venice Township claims Old Rock Road has sunk or collapsed in those areas and has become hazardous to drive.

Venice Township is suing the defendants for the cost of repairing the road and seeks a judgement of more than $50,000 in addition to court fees.

Attorney Edward J. Szewczyk of Granite City represents the township. They ask for a jury trial.
