SALEM – John Cavaletto, Republican candidate for state representative in the 107th District, demanded that Kurt Granberg return a campaign contribution he's taken from Thomas Lakin.
State Board of Elections records show that Granberg accepted a $2,500 contribution from Lakin, founder of the Metro East-based Lakin Law Firm.
Cavaletto also called Granberg's recent attack on Congressman John Shimkus an attempt to score cheap political points.
Cavaletto stated that he was proud to have Shimkus' support.
"Congressman Shimkus has served the people of southern Illinois with honor and distinction," Cavaletto said. "I won't let Kurt Granberg slander his good name, especially when Granberg has taken money from an accused child sex offender."
Over the past six years, L. Thomas Lakin has given $75,000 to the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. Since 2000, Kurt Granberg has accepted $15,450 in campaign contributions from the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.
L. Thomas Lakin and the Lakin Law Firm were named as defendants in a sexual assault civil suit filed in Madison County Circuit Court on April 21, 2006. Lakin is accused of having sexually abused minors during cocaine parties at his East Alton home. The lawsuit alleges that Lakin sexually abused two sons of a former Lakin Law Firm secretary when they were minors and a female from another family when she was a minor.
