Belleville pediatrician David C. Norman, M.D. is being blamed for the death of Trevikoromira Williams who died of bacterial meningoencephalitis nearly two years ago.
Bernice Salmond-Williams filed the wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of her daughter June 23 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.
Salmond-Williams claims Norman treated her daughter for fever, chills, headache, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea beginning Aug. 31, 2004. She is represented by Marc S. Wallis and Mark I. Bronson of Newman Bronson & Wallis of St. Louis and Robert C. O'Neal of the Rex Carr Law Firm in East St. Louis.
According to the suit, the child died Sept. 9, 2004.
Salmond-Williams alleges Norman failed to act upon her daughter's elevated white blood cell count and failed to consider the possibility of a serious bacterial infection in a different diagnosis.
She also claims he failed to obtain vital signs and values in the evaluation of an individual with prolonged symptoms.
"Dr. Norman failed to consider a serious bacterial infection which would have required further evaluation and empirec intravenous antibiotics," the complaint states.
Salmond-Williams is seeking damages for wrongful death and for medical, drug, funeral and incidental expenses.
