Slip and fall suit against Godfrey church settles April 22

A personal injury lawsuit against Christway Church and First Baptist Church of Godfrey settled on April 22.

Plaintiff Carol Carpenter sued the church in Madison County in 2010 claiming she slipped on ice hidden beneath a layer of snow while leaving services on Dec. 27, 2009. She claimed she sustained permanent injuries to her left ankle and left shoulder, requiring three surgeries.

The defendants were accused of negligently designing the parking lot, failing to use proper drainage for the parking lot, failing to remove snow and ice, failing to place salt in areas of unnatural accumulation and removing snow in a way it would accumulate unnaturally in areas of the parking lot and freeze.

A stipulation for dismissal filed on April 30 states the case shall be dismissed with prejudice, with each party bearing its own costs.

Carpenter is represented by Michael P. Glisson of Williamson, Webster, Falb & Glisson in Alton.

The church is represented by Kim Roger Luther and Andrew Luther of Luther & Associates in St. Louis.

Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder presides.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-1290.
