A Democratic primary battle for Madison County Sheriff has been infused with campaign cash.
Incumbent Sheriff Robert Hertz provided his campaign with $20,000 on Feb. 11, to fend off a challenge from his former colleague John Lakin.
Lakin is Glen Carbon police chief and a former chief deputy sheriff in Madison County.
Southern Illinois Miners contributed $10,000 to Lakin on Feb. 13.
Also on Feb. 13, Simmons Law attorney Amy Garrett contributed $1,000 and former Belleville police chief David Ruebhausen, of Granite City, contributed $1,000 to Lakin.
The upcoming March 18 primary could ultimately decide who will be the next Sheriff. While Madison County Republicans did not field a candidate for the primary it is possible that a GOP candidate will be slated for November’s general election to face either Hertz or Lakin.
