Caseyville Village Board trustees voted unanimously tonight to reinstate ousted Police Chief Jose Alvarez.
Alvarez, who was appointed to the position in September by Mayor Leonard Black, was fired by Black last week. Black said his reason for firing Alvarez was to take the department in a different direction.
Trustee Brenda Williams, chair of the village police committee, moved for Alvarez's reinstatement at a board meeting tonight. The motion carried by a vote of 6-0.
Black appointed Alvarez following the suicide of former Chief J.D. Roth on June 13.
Roth had been the subject of a misconduct investigation by the St. Clair County State's Attorney and on administrative leave at the time of his death.
Black named village police officer Frank Moore interim chief when Roth was placed on leave. Black again named Moore chief last week when he fired Alvarez.
