EDWARDSVILLE - A dram shop lawsuit was filed after an intoxicated motorist allegedly caused a fatal crash after downing a bottle of 1800 Tequila.

The lawsuit was filed in the Madison County Circuit Court by Tequila Brewster, individually and as Special Administrator of the Estate of Jakhari Alexander, deceased against RK Fuel Inc., doing business as Circle Stop, and Proximo Spirits Inc.

According to the complaint, RK allegedly sold 1800 Tequila, which is imported, sold and distributed by Proximo Spirits, to a patron who became intoxicated on April 15, 2021. The patron's intoxication resulted in the individual's inability to safely operate a motor vehicle. However, after consuming the bottle of Tequila, the individual allegedly got into a vehicle and drove drunk.

The suit states that the intoxicated motorist caused a crash with Alexander, causing him to suffer fatal injuries.

Brewster is seeking judgment against both defendants for an amount exceeding the jurisdictional limit of the court, plus costs of suit. The plaintiff is represented by attorney Ted N. Gianaris and Joshua A. Edelson of Gianaris Trial Lawyers, LLC.
