EDWARDSVILLE – A wrongful death case filed in the St. Clair County Circuit Court was transferred to the Madison County Circuit Court because the incident allegedly occurred in Madison County and involved Madison County residents.
Plaintiff Jon Sander originally filed the complaint in St. Clair County Circuit Court as the personal representative of the estate of Sheila Sander against Southwestern Illinois Health Facilities, doing business as Anderson Hospital, Anderson Medical Group, Bryson Whalen, M.D., Millennium Anesthesiology Consultants, Sherri Blaha, CRNA and Stephen Luchtfeld, DO, citing negligence.
According to court documents, on March 2, 2023, Sheila Sander was a patient of the defendants for a medical procedure but tragically died after the procedure. Jon Sander, Sheila's husband, alleges Sheila died because the defendants failed to recognize that Sheila was at high risk for blood clots and lung blockages due to her obesity and the birth control pills she was taking. He alleges he defendants failed to take the necessary steps to prevent blood clots during the procedure. He also claims that after the procedure, the defendants administered medication that could cause blood to clot.
Anderson Hospital filed a motion to transfer the complaint from St. Clair County Circuit Court to Madison County District Court based on the grounds that the venue was improper. The motion states that neither the defendants nor the plaintiff are residents of St. Clair County. The motion adds that Anderson Hospital, Anderson Medical Group and Millennium Anesthesiology Consultants have their principal offices and agents in Madison County. Additionally, Whalen, Blaha, Luchtfeld, and Sander are all residents of Madison County. The alleged incident also occurred in Madison County.
Jon Sander is seeking damages for grief, sorrow, loss of consortium and medical expenses, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. He is represented by attorney Thomas Q. Keefe, Jr. of Keefe, Keefe & Unsell, P.C. in Belleville.
