By overwhelming margins, Americans don’t want biological men competing in women’s sports. Surveys consistently show at least 60% opposed and just 30% in support at best, even surveys by left-leaning sources like NPR and The Washington Post.

But on Thursday, every Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives voted against a bill to ban transgender females from women’s school sports teams. That includes all 14 Democratic representatives from Illinois. All Republican representatives voted for the ban. The bill is not expected to pass in the Democratically controlled Senate.

This one completely perplexes me. Growth in women’s sports is among the major steps to equality achieved in my lifetime, particularly Title IX, which in 1972 banned discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity that receives federal funding. It’s all being thrown away. Most of us are all for treating trans people with dignity and respect, but allowing those with X and Y chromosomes to compete against those with two X chromosomes unquestionably will kill women’s sports. I just don’t get why Democrats or anybody else would oppose the ban.
