EDWARDSVILLE – A Granite City nursing home is being sued after a resident fell and suffered from skin wounds before her death.

Rosemarie Brown, acting as independent administrator of the estate of Marie Lisson, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the Madison County Circuit Court against Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, LLC., citing negligence and carelessness in violation of the Illinois Nursing Home Act.

According to the lawsuit, on Oct. 4, 2020, Lisson was a patient in the care of Stearns Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Granite City. The facility had allegedly assessed her as having a high risk of skin breakdown and falls. She allegedly needed specialized care to address these risks.

Despite her assessment, Lisson allegedly suffered skin breakdowns, ulcers, and fall injuries including a hip fracture while under the defendant's care. Lisson was transferred to the hospital on Oct. 9, 2020. Lisson died of her injuries on Oct. 18, 2020, according to the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, the nursing staff at Stearns failed to perform their required duties to properly safeguard Lisson from falling down and failed to safeguard her from developing skin breakdowns. As Lisson was admitted into their care, she was a protected individual under the state's Nursing Home Act. According to the lawsuit, Lisson died as a result of the defendant's negligence and carelessness. Brown alleges Lisson's death has caused grief and sorrow to her next of kin.

The plaintiff seeks damages in excess of $50,000 and is represented in this case by attorney Kent M. Lucaccioni of Kent M. Lucaccioni LTD in Chicago.
