Justice Robert L. Carter and the Supreme Court of Illinois have announced the appointment of Mia S. McPherson as an At-Large Circuit Court Judge in the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit. Ms. McPherson is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the retirement first of Judge Robert G. Kleeman on March 22, 2022, followed by the impending retirement of Judge Kavita Athanikar on October 7, 2022, who had been appointed to the vacancy.
The appointment of Ms. McPherson takes effect on October 24, 2022, and she is running unopposed for the position in the November general election. Ms. McPherson has worked as a solo practitioner at the Law Offices of Mia S. McPherson, P.C., since 2009, concentrating in the areas of felony and misdemeanor criminal defense, municipal law, municipal prosecutions, and family law and has served as the prosecutor for the Village of Wayne. As an associate attorney at Kubiesa, Spiroff, Gosselar, Acker & DeBlasio from 2004 to 2009 she concentrated on municipal representation and was the DUI, traffic and ordinance violation prosecutor for several DuPage County cities and villages. From 1998 to 2004 she served as an Assistant Public Defender in the DuPage County Public Defender’s Office.

“I look forward to serving the people of DuPage County.” Ms. McPherson earned her Bachelor of Arts from Purdue and earned her Juris Doctor from the DePaul University College of Law. Her affiliations include the Illinois State Bar Association, the DuPage Association of Women Lawyer, the DuPage County Bar Foundation, where she is a Past President, the DuPage County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, where she is a Past President, and the DuPage County Bar Association, where she is Vice-Chair of the Criminal Law Section. The Eighteenth Judicial Circuit is located in DuPage County.
