BELLEVILLE – A former employee of the Marissa school district claims she was unjustly terminated after suffering injuries on the job and requesting medical leave.
Plaintiff Laura Kohrs filed a lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against the Marissa Community Unit School District #40, citing common law retaliatory discharge in violation of the Family Medical Leave Act.
According to the lawsuit, Kohrs was employed by the Marissa Community Unit School District and was injured on the job. As a result of her injury, Kohrs allegedly requested Illinois Workers Compensation Benefits in the form of medical leave, which she claims she qualified for. The plaintiff alleges that instead of granting her request, the school district terminated her from her position.
The plaintiff alleges her termination was in violation of the Family Medical Leave Act. She claims that as a result of her termination she has endured pain, suffering and emotional trauma. Kohrs also claims she is entitled to lost wages, future earnings and benefits past and present.
The plaintiff is requesting a jury trial to seek damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. She is represented in this case by attorney Michael J. Brunton, of Brunton Law Offices, P.C. in Collinsville.
