BELLEVILLE – A Cahokia resident is suing his landlord alleging that improperly maintained handrails caused him to fall down the front steps of his property.

Plaintiff Drew Johnson filed a lawsuit in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against defendant Thomas Denham, citing negligence and carelessness.

According to the lawsuit, Johnson is a lawful resident residing at a Cahokia property owned, operated and maintained by the defendant. Johnson claims that on Dec. 1, 2021, he was standing at the top steps of the property when he reached out to grab a handrail post that was not properly attached to the stairs, causing him to fall down the stairs and seriously injure himself.

The plaintiff claims that he has sustained permanent injury to his right leg, which has caused him "great pain and mental anguish." Johnson states that as a result of his injuries, he has incurred medical costs and will continue to require medical care to recover from his injuries.

Johnson is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus court costs and any other relief the court deems proper. He is represented in this case by attorney Patrick L. Mickey of Brown and Crouppen, P.C. in St. Louis, MO.
