BELLEVILLE — A dog owner in Cahokia is being sued after his pit bull allegedly attacked a woman without provocation and killed her dog.

Joann Brownlee filed a complaint in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Demeiko Broaden, alleging negligence.

Brownlee claims in her lawsuit that she was lawfully on a premises in Cahokia on Aug. 7, 2021, while taking her dog out. She alleges Broaden's pit bull-type dog, which had a "vicious and aggressive propensity," attacked her and killed her dog without warning or provocation.

Brownlee claims that as a result of the attack, she endured disability, disfigurement, pain and suffering. She also claims she incurred medical treatment expenses.

She alleges Broaden was negligent for failing to properly train his dog from attacking and failing to control his dog. Brownlee also alleges Broaden violated the Illinois Animal Control Act and that he had a duty to use ordinary care for the safety of others.

Brownlee seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Jarrod Beasley of Kuehn, Beasley & Young PC in Belleville.
