BELLEVILLE — Walmart is facing a negligence claim from a customer who allegedly slipped on ice accumulation in the parking lot of its supercenter in Belleville.

Janet Hayes filed a complaint Aug. 16 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Walmart Inc., alleging negligence.

Hayes alleges in her complaint that she was shopping at the Walmart Supercenter on Green Mount Commons Drive in Belleville on Dec. 19, 2019, when she slipped on "an unnatural accumulation of ice" in the parking lot. She claims that as a result of the fall, she suffered serious, painful and permanent injuries to her hands, wrists, knees. She also alleges she incurred medical care expenses.

Hayes claims Walmart was negligent for failing to remove the ice accumulation in the parking lot and that its employees knew or "in the exercise of ordinary care should have known" of the unsafe condition. She also alleges Walmart failed to barricade the area until the ice accumulation had been properly removed.

Hayes seeks compensation of more than $50,000, and all other proper relief. She is represented by John Hipskind and Brady McAninch of Hipskind & McAninch LLC in Belleville.
