EDWARDSVILLE — A woman is suing the owner and tenant of a mobile home in Alton after a broken handrail allegedly caused her to fall down the exterior steps.

Denise Garrett filed a complaint  Aug. 11 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Amey Hawkins and Enchanted Village LLC, alleging negligence.

According to Garrett's complaint, she was at a mobile home property on Droopy Lane in Alton on Feb. 4, that was owned by Enchanted Village and leased by Hawkins. She alleges she was attempting to use the stairs on the mobile home, which had a broken handrail and were attached to the exterior deck. As she was using them, the stairs allegedly became detached, causing her to fall.

Garrett claims she suffered injuries which caused her to experience pain and disability. She claims her injuries prevented her from maintaining her employment and "usual activities of daily living."

She alleges the defendants were negligent for failing to secure the handrail, failing to inspect the property for unsafe conditions and failing warn of the broken handrail. Garrett also alleges the defendants failed to provide a safe means of ingress and egress on the property.

Garrett seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Lanny Darr of The Darr Law Offices LTD in Alton.
