EAST ST. LOUIS — An insurance carrier is seeking to recoup the more than $800,000 claim it paid out to one of its insureds, who allegedly caused a fire while transferring propane to his RV tank.

Great American Insurance Company also known as AMS International Moving LLC filed a complaint July 29 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against Eric Crimson, alleging negligence.

According to Great American Insurance's complaint, Crimson, who is insured by the plaintiff, caused a fire while transferring propane from a 40-pound tank to an RV propane tank on Dec. 13, 2020. Great American alleges that Crimson was heating one tank with a heat gun and heating the other tank with a fan to "aid" in the propane transfer when the heat gun ignited leaking propane. Crimson then filed a $892,859.30 claim for the damages, which Great American paid per the policy, according to the suit. The plaintiff claims Crimson's negligence for failing to transfer the propane in a safe manner and his careless actions caused the fire and property damage.

Great American seeks compensation of $892,859.30, plus interest and all other just relief. It is represented by Matthew McLean of Thompson, Brody & Kaplan LLP in Chicago.
