Woman allegedly slipped on icy sidewalk at Flying J truck stop

Lawsuits

BELLEVILLE — Pilot Flying J is accused of negligence after a woman allegedly fell on an icy sidewalk at a truck stop in Channonahon and suffered injuries.

Susan Harris and William Harris filed a complaint Jan. 14 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Pilot Travel Centers LLC, doing business as Pilot Flying J, and Terry Polk, alleging negligence.

According to their complaint, the plaintiffs were at the Flying J located on W. Eames Street in Channahon on Jan. 23, 2019. They allege that Susan Harris fell on the sidewalk at the Pilot Flying J because it was covered "in an unnatural accumulation of ice." She allegedly suffered "severe injuries."

Specifically, the plaintiffs allege Susan Harris suffered injuries to her shoulder, elbow and back that required "medical, surgical and rehabilitative" treatments.

The plaintiffs claim Pilot Flying J failed to keep their premises "reasonably safe" and failed to take steps to "remedy any unsafe conditions." They also claim Pilot Flying J failed to warn of the hazard or place a barricade around the area and failed to train and properly supervise its employees.

The plaintiffs seek compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. They are represented by Charles Armbruster, III and Michael Blotevogel of Armbruster Fripps Winterscheidt & Bloteveogel LLC in Maryville.
