Woman sues East Alton property owner over fall down stairs

Lawsuits

EDWARDSVILLE — A woman who allegedly fell down a staircase at an East Alton property and fractured her ankle is claiming the homeowner and tenant were negligent.

Leslie Carpunky filed a complaint Jan. 6 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Kelly Crawford and Mike Nagel, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Carpunky was visiting a property located on Oakdale Drive in East Alton on June 21. Crawford rented the property from Nagel. She alleges she was walking down the staircase on the property when she grabbed an "unsecured handrail," fell down the staircase and suffered a fractured right ankle.

Carpunky claims Crawford and Nagel are negligent for failing to maintain the property "in a reasonably safe condition" and for not "adequately" securing the handrail on the staircase. She also claims the defendants failed to "provide a safe ingress and egress" and neglected to warn guests about the handrail.

Carpunky alleges her ankle injury required surgical repair and she has incurred medical expenses as a result of her alleged fall down the staircase.

Carpunky seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief.
