EDWARDSVILLE — An ambulance company and one of its EMTs is being sued after a patient allegedly suffered cardiac arrest while in route to the hospital and later died.

Pamela Nolan, as special administrator of the Estate of Olivia Nolan, filed a complaint  Nov. 19 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Matthew Hill and Mission Care of Illinois LLC, doing business as Abbott EMS, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Palmela Nolan's mother, Olivia Nolan, died on Nov. 26, 2019. The plaintiff alleges that on Oct. 29, 2019, her mother began to experience shortness of breath and an ambulance was called at 9 p.m. She alleges that the ambulance arrived at her mother's house at approximately 9:14 p.m. The plaintiff further alleges in the complaint that her mother had been two weeks post heart surgery. She was given oxygen and allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest while in route to the hospital.

The plaintiff claims that Hill, an EMT, failed to recognize her mother's "cardiac compromise," failed to respond to Olivia Nolan's hypotension and increased heart rate and failed to connect her mother to a cardiac monitor while in the ambulance. She also claims the medical technicians failed to "provide appropriate emergency medical services."

The plaintiff seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. She is represented by Keith Short of Keith Short and Associates PC in Alton.
