Man sues over fall down staircase at Granite City apartment

Lawsuits

EDWARDSVILLE — A man is suing his landlord after he allegedly tripped and fell down a poorly lit staircase at a Granite City apartment.

George Wade filed a complaint Nov. 17 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Michael Dixon and Charlotte Dixon, alleging negligence.

Wade states in his complaint that he entered into a lease agreement with the Dixons on Nov. 12, 2019, to rent a unit on Cleveland Boulevard in Granite City. He alleges that on Feb. 20, he attempted to walk down the "shared staircase" in his building from the second level when he tripped and fell. At the time of his fall, he claims the staircase had poor lighting.

Wade claims he fractured a vertebrae in his back as a result of his alleged fall. He also claims he suffered "severe emotional pain and disability."

He alleges the Dixons are negligent for failing to have the stairway in the building "in a reasonably safe condition." Wade specifically claims that the defendants failed to supervise maintenance, failed to inspect the staircase, failed to "adequately illuminate" the staircase and failed to warn of the dangerous condition due to the alleged poor lighting.

Wade seeks compensation of more than $50,000 and all other just relief. He is represented by Derek Siegel of Kuehn, Beasley & Young PC in Belleville.
