ILLINOIS SUPREME COURT: Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride Announces Vacancy in Tenth Judicial Circuit

Illinois Supreme Court issued the following announcement on July 24.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas L. Kilbride has announced an application process for an appointment to a Resident Circuit Judge vacancy in Marshall County in the Tenth Judicial Circuit. The vacancy will be created by the retirement of Circuit Judge Michael P. McCuskey, effective October 20, 2020. The term of office will conclude the first Monday in December following the November 2022 general election. Under the Illinois Constitution, judicial vacancies are filled by Supreme Court appointment. Justice Kilbride will make a recommendation to the full Court after applicants undergo an evaluation and screening process. Notice of the vacancy has been posted in the courthouses throughout the Circuit.

Applicants must submit one original and the requisite number of copies of the application and other documents as instructed in the application packet. To be considered, all documents must be received at the office of Justice Thomas L. Kilbride, Illinois Supreme Court, 1819 4th Avenue, Rock Island, IL 61201 by no later than 11:30 a.m. on August 24, 2020.

The applicant must be admitted to practice law in Illinois and be in good standing with the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission or any other respective disciplinary body.

A person appointed to fill the vacancy must be a resident of Marshall County at the time of appointment. Other qualities an applicant must possess include: a demonstrated reputation for integrity and good character; a demonstrated commitment to equal justice under law; outstanding legal ability and competence; and the appropriate demeanor, character and temperament. An applicant must also possess the ability to deal with complex legal problems, aptitude for legal scholarship and writing, and a familiarity with the trial courts and court processes. Applicants will also be subject to a judicial advisory poll conducted by the Illinois State Bar Association.
