Customer alleges Schnucks' negligence led to fall

State Court

EDWARDSVILLE – A customer shopping at a Schnucks store in Bethalto alleges she suffered an injury to her left shoulder after slipping on a liquid and falling to the floor.

Frances J. Halsey also alleges there was a blockage in the aisle, which contributed to the danger facing customers shopping at the Airport Plaza store Jan. 11.

The plaintiff, who filed suit in Madison County Circuit Court, alleges negligence on the part of the store and its staff. She seeks more than $50,000 in damages and costs of suit.

Halsey alleges the Schnucks managers and operators had duty to maintain the premises in a way that would not cause an injury to the plaintiff and other members of the public. The store and its staff, “negligently and carelessly” allowed liquid to be left on the floor, failed to clean or inspect it, and did not warn customers of the alleged danger, the suit states. A stock cart and pallet blocked the aisle, the plaintiff added.

Halsey slipped and fell on the liquid, the complaint states, which caused an injury to her left shoulder, leading to medical bills, disability and pain and suffering.

She is represented by attorney Laura A. Cole of Smith, Mendenhall, Selby & Cole of Alton.

Madison County Circuit Court Case number 2019-L-1355.
