BELLEVILLE — A patient is suing a Swansea dentist, alleging she suffered a mandibular fracture during a tooth extraction.

Jemia Middleton filed a complaint May 15 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Yun Sup Kim and Yun Sup Kim DDS LLC, doing business as Emerald Terrance Dental Care, alleging negligence.

The suit states Kim performed a dental extraction on Middleton on Nov. 6, 2017, on teeth 1, 16, 17 and 32. The plaintiff claims she suffered from pain, discomfort, bleeding and the inability to close her jaw following the procedure. She went to Memorial Hospital on Nov. 18, 2017 for swelling and bilateral jaw pain associated with the extraction.

She was diagnosed with a "bilateral mandibular fracture centered around the extraction sites with displacement."

The suit states that Middleton had to undergo "an open reduction with internal fixation via multiple approaches with interdental fixation" in order to fix the damages caused by Kim, which led to mental anguish and missed work days.

Middleton seeks relief in excess of $50,000 and court costs. She is represented by attorney Daniel C. Katzman of Katzman & Sugden LLC in Belleville.
