BELLEVILLE — A registered nurse is suing a Belleville hospital facility, alleging the defendant interfered with her rights when she sought time off to care for her ill mother.

Jeanne Bartlett filed a complaint Jan. 14 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center Inc., doing business as Memorial Hospital, alleging violation of the Family and Medical Leave Act.

According to the complaint, Bartlett alleges the defendant discriminated against her by forcing her to take an early retirement while she cared for her ill mother and by refusing to allow her to continue working. As a result, she was unable to return to work after her mother died and "reluctantly" signed her resignation Dec. 9, 2018.

Bartlett claims she suffered lost wages and benefits, emotional distress, humiliation and sadness.

Bartlett seeks trial by jury, judgment greater than $50,000, with interest, attorney fees and court costs. She is represented by attorney John H. Leskera of Leskera Law Firm in Collinsville.
